The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. There’s a reason this book is a modern classic – it reminds us that all of life is the adventure of our Self from our humble beginnings to becoming the heroes of our own making. And there’s a second reason I am recommending it for the Monday Book Nook – it’s a dreamer’s story. When we recognize that all of life is a dream, and that daily we face trolls and orcs, dark mountains and frightening unknowns, we learn that we also have within us special abilities and our own wizardry to overcome these challenges. Being playful with them is a great first step, and the magic wand we carry is our imagination. And finally, though he does protest this claim, Mr. Tolkien has written a superb allegory about the rift mankind has placed between ourselves and nature, and the terrible price we pay by doing so… and at the same time the dreaming way to leap across that rift and right it.
