For anyone who doesn’t know about Amma, also known as The Hugging Saint, this documentary will be an eye-opener; if you already know about her, you’ll find your heart opening even wider: Darshan: The Embrace
I have been aware of Amma for a number of years now and what I continue to learn and revere in her is that she is a true teacher of her tradition replete with meditation, pujas, and chants, and blessing thousands, and at the same time she grounds her work in practical actions to help others. Amma has built over three large hospitals to care for the castes that go uncared for, built entire villages for outcast widows, spoken to the UN about the state of the world, and raised $22 million for victims of the 2004 Tsunami, among many other things. Any one of these alone is miraculous; all of them is mind-blowing. We live in this world and while we reach up to embrace our spiritual capacity it is always good to be reminded we must push down with good roots in the material.
